Word From the Gobi
Tuesday, May 12:
Forty one days ago I entered the South Gobi Desert in southern Mongolia.Tomorrow I will be leaving it. Arrived in the capital city of South Gobi, Dalanzagad this afternoon after a six hour drive through the unpaved desert. This experience far exceeded anything hoped for or dreamed of. I will begin unpacking some of my thoughts and experiences later but first I’ll enjoy my first shower since April 1. Pictured here is my new family and best friends. Among other things, they own about eighty cashmere goats, thirty camels, fifteen horses, and a dozen sheep. They have two extra gers, one of which has been my home. Hearts were heavy when we said goodbye this morning, and will be for some time. (L-R) Darriimaa, Ehnktuya, Suguraa and Lhagva. Also, Ehnktuya and me with my new goat, Yoda. I bought the baby goat because I wanted to be a goat owner in Mongolia. We are still working out the details of the ‘purchase’. The force is strong in this one.
